Its a common saying "SELL in May & Go AWAY".

Its not always true really. Lets look at historical stats for confirmation. Below's the Nifty performance in the month of May in the last 12 years.

1999 May - UP 12%
2001 May - UP 7%
2002 May - FLAT
2003 May - UP 4%
2004 May - DOWN 17%
2005 May - UP 7%
2006 May - DOWN 9%
2007 May - UP 4%
2008 May - DOWN 7%
2009 May - UP 29%
2010 May - DOWN 4%
2011 May - DOWN 5%

As you can see, Markets have only been down in 5 out of the last 12 years. So, in essence, you cant take this saying as a thumb rule.
