The Tamil Nadu state government yesterday, 17 November 2011 announced a steep hike in the prices of milk and bus fares. The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, J Jayalalithaa, while making the announcement yesterday also added the there might be an increase in the power tariff as well.

The minimum bus fare have been increased by Rs 1 to Rs 3 and the maximum bus fare have been hiked by Rs 5 to Rs 12 across the state other than Chennai. In the state capital, the maximum bus fare has gone up by Rs 2 to Rs 14. The price of milk has gone up by Rs 6.25 per litre to Rs 24. The milk procurement prices have also been increased by Rs 2 per litre.

The chief minister blamed the Central government for being biased towards Tamil Nadu government and also added that her government had no other alternative but to increase the prices as the previous ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government had brought the state to bankruptcy.
